Kirkcaldy Cyclestart group rides

26 July 2014 - 10:00am

The group meet for 10am at the Beveridge Park gates.

Following the great success of last year’s led cycle rides by Cyclestart, a 6 month programme of events has just been launched, that started in March.

These rides, led by experienced ride leaders, will follow many of the quiet traffic-free routes in and around the Kingdom. The emphasis is on fun and the rides are open to everyone - children are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent and be able to cycle comfortably.

The cycle rides start with short routes lasting about an hour and they progress at the riders' pace.

These led cycle rides form part of the Council’s commitment to promoting healthier and more active lives. Councillor Pat Callahan said: “Cyclestart is a great initiative to get people out on their bikes, being active and meeting new people.

“Fife Council has been at the forefront of encouraging people to cycle for over 20 years. We have a network of over 350 miles of dedicated cycleways, extensive 20mph residential zones and in a range of projects encouraging people to cycle more.”

“We support the Government in their vision that 10% of all trips in Scotland will be by bike by 2020 and Fife has ambitious plans for delivering this. Through partnership working and encouraging local communities to get involved, we can deliver on these plans - benefitting the health and wellbeing of Fifers.”

Project co-ordinator Marta Ramage explained a little bit more about the initiative: “Cyclestart has been running since 2011 and has been successful at getting people back out and about on their bikes.  This year, we have developed an online booking system and produced a 6 month programme to encourage further participants to join in in regular cycle rides.

“These rides are designed for beginner cyclists or those who have been away from the saddle for some time.  They are easy rides with experienced volunteers to help you gain confidence and meet like-minded people.

“We also have training days available for volunteers who would like to join us and full details of these can be found on the Cyclestart webpage”.

Summer has begun, so why not get your bike out of the shed and join one of our fun cycle rides.
