Pearl Izumi Tour Series 2013, Kirkcaldy 14th May
Roll on summer, the weather was perfect as the Pearl Izumi Series rolled into town. On Tuesday 14th May Kirkcaldy hosted the first round of this years series of road races which travels around Britain, with Kirkcaldy being the only location in Scotland. There are eleven rounds in all finishing in Ipswich on Friday 14th June. Unlike other race series, this series is all about teams with the UK’s top teams racing to be series Champions.
There was a strong field of riders, including Olympic Champion Ed Clancy (finished 12th), World Champion Andy Tennant (finished 13th) and Commonwealth Bronze medallist and Scottish Champion James McCallum (finished 9th).
The winner on the day was Yanto Barker (GBR) from Team UK Youth, closely followed by Tom Scully (NZL) from Team Raleigh and Mike Northey (NZL) from Node4 Giordanna Racing. With the team event being closely contested and the overall winners were Team Raleigh.
There was great interest in Kirkcaldy High Street during the day with stalls promoting cycling and activities in and around Fife.
Make your move Kirkcaldy had a constant stream of interested spectators looking for information of what is locally available. This project promotes sustainably transport in Kirkcaldy, as part of this there are strong links with groups offering cycle training, cycle rides, cycle initiatives at schools and much more. Groups of school kids from St Maries, Torbain & Pathhead Primary Schools took part in a ‘Cycle Train’ to the event led by Greg & Susan along with school staff, parents and volunteers. They then had the opportunity to cycle 5 laps of the track giving them the chance to try out the route used by the professionals in the evening.
